Width. The first number on your tyre tells the cross-sectional width, in millimeters, from sidewall to sidewall. The width directly affects the tyre’s contact patch—the portion of the tyre that makes contact with the road. Wider tyres generally provide more contact area, which can enhance traction and handling, especially in dry conditions.
The first number is the easiest and measures the width of the tyre in metric millimetres. 235 means your tyre is 235mm wide. 235/ 45 R17. The second number refers to the profile of the tyre or the height of the tyre’s sidewall. The number isn’t in millimetres but is instead an aspect ratio measurement of how the height relates to total width.
Width (A) - The tyre width measured in millimetres. In this example, the width is 185. Profile / Aspect Ratio (B) - The profile is the depth of the tyre sidewall. This measurement is taken from the wheel to the outer circumference of the tyre and is a percentage of your tyre's width (55% of 185mm). In the example above, the profile is 55.
4″ = refers to the diameter of the rim, in inches. It should be noted that tire sizes in the industry are not exact. It is not unusual for tire dimensions to be slightly different than the tire markings. For example, a 4.80/4.00-8″ tire typically has a 15.5″ diameter rather than the 16″ diameter you would expect.

80 indicates Aspect Ratio of tyre. This number indicates sidewall height of the tyre as a percentage of tyre width. Here, sidewall height of the tyre is 80% of the width. Tyre Construction R indicates that the tyre has radial ply construction. Almost all car tyres come with radial ply construction.
Mostly, this will be R. Sometimes, diagonally constructed tires will show a D. In the area of wheel diameter or size, P205/60 R 16 92H, this tells you how large the rim is. This example uses a 16″ wheel size, a rim with a 16″ diameter. The load index, P205/60 R16 92 H, tells the maximum weight the tires can hold.
